Elwood, Indiana
Benjamin "Ben" Lloyd Richwine, of Elwood, Indiana, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2026. Born in Elwood on June 10, 1944, Ben was a kind, giving, and loving soul who touched the lives of many. For more than 50 years, he was a dedicated and hard-working farmer who understood and lived the wisdom of Ecclesiastes 3, knowing there was a season for every activity under the heavens – a time to plant, and a time to uproot.
Ben grew up on the family farm outside of Elwood. He attended Frankton High School and was a member of the class of 1962. He then went on to graduate from Purdue University.
Ben was a man who never knew a stranger. His outgoing personality and gentle, caring heart made him a beloved figure in the community. During his younger years, Ben was an active member of the Elwood Elks Lodge and a familiar face on the sidelines as a coach of his children's youth basketball teams. When he wasn't working on the farm, Ben could often be found tending to his lawn and garden, cheering on his alma mater, Purdue, in basketball and football, or substitute teaching at Elwood Community Schools. Whatever else he might have been doing, Ben was nearly always laughing with his friends and family with whom he enjoyed vacationing at Daytona, Indian Rocks, and Gulf Shores Beaches in Florida and Alabama. He was especially fond of spending time at his family's lake cottage in North Webster, Indiana.
Ben was married to his beloved wife, Nancy, on July 18, 1981. He was a devoted father to Nathan (Amy) Richwine, Gabe (Courtney) Richwine, and Alexandra (Jacob) Dunnichay. He was also a proud grandfather of eight grandchildren, Brielle, Ben, Logan, Drew, Hudson, Peyton, Reagan, and Riggins, who affectionately knew him as "Pop-Pop." He is also survived by his siblings Mary Faye Collins, Cindy Bruggner, and Bill (Carolyn) Richwine. Ben was preceded in death by his parents, John "Lloyd" and Dorothy "Dot" Richwine, and his brother, Bob Richwine. Ben's family meant the world to him, and he will always mean the world to them.
Ben's family would like to give a special thanks to the wonderful staff of Elwood Health and Living for their compassionate and loving care of Ben during the final months of his life.
Visitation for Ben will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Dunnichay Funeral Home, located at 1113 South Anderson Street, Elwood, Indiana, 46036. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, October 9, 2026, at 11:00 am at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1306 South A Street, Elwood, Indiana, 46036, with Father Dennis Goth officiating.
