Carolyn Mitchell

–

Elwood, Indiana

Carolyn Joyce Mitchell, a lifelong resident of Elwood, Indiana, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2026. She was born on August 9, 1935, in Elwood, to Ralph and Tennie Saxton, marking the beginning of a life filled with creativity, ambition, love, and wit. Carolyn, known for her vibrant personality and infectious laughter, was a cherished figure in her community and her family.

Carolyn led an accomplished and fulfilling life. For most of her career, she was a talented cabinet designer for Wickes Lumber. Prior to Wickes, Carolyn worked at the Elwood Theatre and Hinshaw Drug Store; after Wickes, she spent time working at both Dunn-Rite Pool Products and Ricker's Gas Station. In her free time, she was an avid square dancer and roller skater, and she loved attending local festivals. One of her most cherished pastimes was going to Michigan to mushroom hunt with her relatives. Never missing an episode, Carolyn was also a dedicated viewer of 'Days of Our Lives'. However, her favorite role was that of being a loving mother, grandmother, and sister. Family was what mattered most to Carolyn; she embraced these roles with all her heart and found great joy in them.

Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Kennetta (Gary) Jetty; son, Oakie (Robyn) Mitchell; granddaughters, Nancy Jetty, Melissa Jetty , and Lindsey (Travis) White; grandson, Jamie (Mackenzie) Jetty and Christopher Mitchell; 5 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great grandchildren; and sister, Judith Shaw. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Tennie Saxton, and her granddaughter, Michelle Mitchell.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during Carolyn's visitation on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, from 11:00am - 1:00pm at Dunnichay Funeral Home, 1113 South Anderson Street, Elwood, Indiana, 46036. The funeral service will follow at 1:00pm with Pastor Scott Blaylock officiating.
