Elwood, Indiana
Kay Walker/Joyner of Elwood entered eternal rest on January 6, 2025, at the Elwood Health and Living facility; the cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother was 89. One of seven children, Kay was born in Wabash, IN on March 31, 1935, the only daughter of Ted and Elsie Parker. A 1953 graduate of Wabash High School, she would go on to attend Ball State Teachers College and work in several positions throughout her life, most notably as an assistant to Dr. Updike's veterinary practice and as a manager for the House of Glass. On July 23, 1955, Kay was wed to Richard Walker, and they shared 32 years of marriage until his passing in 1987. Ten years later, Kay would marry Lewis Joyner on September 27, 1997; they would enjoy 19 years together until his passing in 2016.
Kay was a woman of many talents. She was particularly creative and was always excited to tap into her artistic side with paints or stained glass. She was an accomplished seamstress as well, and could handle just about any sewing job, from making small darning repairs to fashioning full dresses. An excellent cook, Kay was known for her weekly Sunday fried chicken meals, and her Christmas cookies were widely regarded as the best. She was a caring soul who was invested in her community, and she was a proud member of Tri Kappa. Above all Kay was a dedicated wife and mother. She loved her family deeply and loved being a mom. Hers is a spirit that will be greatly missed.
Kay is survived by her three sons: Michael (Cathy) Walker of Elwood; Robert (Tammie) Walker of Leland, NC; and Kelly (Claudia) Walker of Glendale Heights, IL. She is also survived by a step-daughter, Caryl Shelton of Anderson; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews; and her close and dearest friend, Theresa Mangas.
In addition to her parents and her husbands, Kay was preceded in death by her brothers: Jacque, John, Bob, Al, Tom, and Ted.
Services for Kay will take place this Friday, January 10, 2025, at Dunnichay Funeral Home in Elwood, Indiana. Viewing hours will be from 11:00am until 1:00pm; a funeral ceremony officiated by Rev.
