Queenie Leavell Obituary (1946 - 2023)

Marqueena "Queenie" (Welch) Leavell, age 77, of Elwood, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Friday, October 20, 2023. Queenie was born in Elwood on April 28, 1946, to the late Virgil and Deloris (Faucett) Welch. She was a lifelong resident of Elwood and graduated from Wendell L. Willkie High School with the class of 1964. Queenie married Rich Leavell, the love of her life, and they would have celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on November 11th. Queenie was the matriarch of her beloved family. She and Rich were local business owners, and they carried on her father's legacy by operating Welch Trucking Company, which was established in the 1940's. Queenie loved watching and supporting her husband throughout his baseball and racing careers. She was the biggest fan of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren during their sporting events and all life achievements. She loved to vacation with her husband and family in Florida to soak up the sun, sand, and sea. Queenie loved and trusted the Lord with all her heart. She will always be remembered as a powerful prayer warrior; never giving up on her loved ones or anyone in need. Queenie leaves behind her loving husband Rich and extended family; sister, Debbie High; children, Stormi (Roy) Conner, Mark Leavell, Claude (Crystal) Leavell, and Virgil (Beth) Leavell; grandchildren, Nicholas Conner, London Leavell, Gabby Leavell, Maleah Jackson, Lynsey Leavell, Claudia Leavell, Zachary Brown, Lucy Leavell, and Corbin Leavell; great-grandchildren, Chloe Conner, Lazarus Conner, Nicarah Conner, Gordon Leavell, Goldie Leavell, Gunnar Tunnell, and Erin Perez; nephew, Jamie (Andrea) High; great-nieces, Aleysha Jones, Christian High, and Lexi High. Close family friends, Edna Updegraff, Jackie and Bobby Hanlin, Jeanie Fousts, Doc and Sherri Miller, and so many more within the community and throughout their racing family. Along with her parents, Queenie was preceded in death by her granddaughters, Wendi Conner and Alexis Leavell; and her great-nephew, Shane Jones. Visitation will be Thursday, October 26, 2023, from 1:00 pm - 8:00 pm & Friday, October 27, 2023, from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm at Dunnichay Funeral Home, 1113 S. Anderson Street, Elwood, Indiana. The funeral service celebrating Queenie's life will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 27, 2023, at Dunnichay Funeral Home, Elwood, Indiana with her husband Rich Leavell officiating.
