Elwood, Indiana
On August 8, 2026, Richard Anthony Abel, affectionately known to many as Tony or Fro, closed his eyes to his earthly home and opened them to a celestial one. Born on August 16, 1956, in Anderson, Indiana, Richard lived a life of dedication, service, and love, touching the lives of many through his work, hobbies, and warm-heartedness. A life-long learner, Richard was a passionate weather watcher and star gazer, and his fascination with the universe's intricacies was as boundless as his love for his family and pets.
Richard was a steadfast presence in the community of Elwood, Indiana, where he resided. He spent a remarkable 17 years at Elsa, Elwood, retiring in 2024. His dedication and work ethic were evident in his tenure at Elsa, but his true calling was at Abel's Tavern, where he served as manager and bartender for 30 years. Known for his friendly demeanor and the ability to make everyone feel welcome, his legacy will be remembered by many. His accomplishments were numerous, but what mattered most to Richard was his family, to whom he was a wonderful husband, coach, father, grandfather, and friend.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Julie Abel; his sons, Matthew (Laurie) and Benjamin (Debbie); his daughter, Sarah Abel; his sister, Sue Skinner; his grandchildren, Jaccob Bebout, Michael Abel, Karli Abel, Alexa Abel, Maddy Marshall, Emily Abel, and Kristen Abel; and his great-grandchildren, Jackson Ice, Kyrie Abel, and Atlas Abel. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Sr.; his mother, Phyllis Abel; his brother, Patrick Abel; and his son, Phillip Riley.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 2 pm to 5 pm on Sunday, October 11, 2026, at the Birch Bayh Community Center in Elwood. Arrangements have been entrusted by Dunnichay Funeral Home of Elwood.
