William L "Bill" Garner Obituary (1949 - 2020)

William L. "Bill" Garner, age 70, life long resident of Elwood, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Monday, March 9, 2020, bravely battling a long time illness. Bill was born in Elwood on July 22, 1949, to Leslie and Theo (Jones) Garner. On Sept. 23, 1973, he married the love of his life Norma Jean (Hughes) Garner. Together they had five children two of which passed at birth. Bill worked hard for his family and loved being a husband and father. In 1968, he joined the US Army serving his country and was stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War. After the war Bill worked to support his family as a construction worker. He loved building houses and working with his hands. He retired in 2003. Bill loved being outdoors, and he loved bowling at Wells Lanes. He formerly served on the men's bowling league board. He loved being a grandfather. He had a special bond with his grandchildren. Bill is survived by his mother, Theo Garner of Peru, his loving wife of 46 years, Norma Jean Garner of Peru, his loving & devoted daughter, Amanda (Johnny) Cano of Elwood, two sons, Matthew Garner of Elwood and William M. Garner, II of Anderson, 5 grandchildren, Katelyn Neese of Elwood, William L. Cano of Elwood, Jonathan Garner of FL, Elijah Garner of Anderson & Christopher Garner of Anderson, four sisters, Lola (Mike) Wilhoit of Peru, Bonnie (Kenny) Hornbeck of Alexandria, Connie (Jerry) Poindexter of Frankton and Wilma (Richard) Hardebeck of Elwood, two brothers, Jeffrey Garner of Waco, TX and Tom Jones of FL, special friend, Jeff Partlow and several nieces & nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his Father, Leslie Garner, twin children, William & Lola Garner and a brother, Mike Cartwrite. Funeral service celebrating Bill's life will be at 5:00 pm Thursday, March 12, 2020, at Dunnichay Funeral Home, Elwood, Indiana with Rev. Matthew Miller officiating. Military honors will follow by the US Army and the VFW American Honor Guard. Visitation will be Thursday, March 12, 2020, from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm, at Dunnichay Funeral Home, 1113 S.
